My name is Jose Posada, and I am currently studying BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering at Birmingham City University. Having recently completed my first year, I was keen to gain practical experience and develop a better understanding of the engineering industry from a professional perspective. My four-week summer placement with South West Flood & Coastal provided exactly that and far exceeded my expectations.

During the first two weeks, I was based in the office and out on site. On my first day, I joined engineers carrying out a terrain stability survey at West Cliff Lift in Bournemouth. Throughout the placement, I had the opportunity to take part in surveys, site inspections, data processing, and the preparation of inspection and maintenance documents for coastal assets. I particularly enjoyed seeing how detailed monitoring is used to understand cliff movement and how even small changes can influence decision-making and asset management.

One of the highlights of the placement was visiting the Poole Bridge to Hunger Hill Flood Defence Scheme. It was fascinating to see a major infrastructure project in person and learn about everything involved, from planning and environmental considerations to traffic management, construction, and the long-term benefits of protecting communities from flood risk. I also attended meetings where engineers discussed project options and tender submissions, which gave me an insight into the work that takes place long before construction begins.

During the remote part of the placement, I worked on tasks including asset inspections, maintenance manual databases, and the creation of project graphics and infographics. Each morning, I also met with different members of the team to learn about their careers and areas of expertise. These conversations were one of the most valuable aspects of the placement. I gained insight into communications and stakeholder engagement, project management, asset management, commercial operations, coastal science, and flood and coastal engineering. The advice shared by experienced professionals helped me better understand the different career paths available within the industry and the skills needed to succeed.

What surprised me most was how multi-disciplinary engineering projects are. Before starting the placement, I mainly associated engineering with technical design and calculations. However, I quickly realised how important communication, teamwork, planning, environmental considerations, contracts, funding, and project management are in delivering successful schemes.

The experience has given me valuable knowledge, skills, and inspiration for the future. It has broadened my understanding of the many opportunities available within civil engineering and strengthened my motivation to pursue a career in the industry. Above all, I was impressed by the expertise, passion, and friendliness of everyone at South West Flood & Coastal. From the first day, I felt welcomed, supported, and encouraged to learn. I am very grateful for the opportunity and would highly recommend the placement to other students considering a career in engineering.
